Hotel Infinity (PSVR2/Meta Quest)
Solving puzzles and walking around in circles
The idea of walking around in circles and never bumping in to something while in VR is the absolute dream. It would seem that Studio Chyr have managed that just with the title Hotel Infinity.
The game uses the Room Scale playing area and not once did I feel like I was about to walk in to something. I played this game on the PSVR2 and to advise I do have a pulley system set up for the wire, so I was fairly free to play without being too worried of that aspect, I can only imagine the freedom that the Quest gives would make this an even better experience.
At the start you arrive at the hotel and have to make your way up to your room, once there you're then tasked with finding your way back out. Every corner opens up a new pathway, it offers up something only video games can do really. What should be a dead end, turns in to a vast corridor to walk, with some light minded environmental puzzles along the way, this isn't a game that will leave you stumped for a while, there's often visual clues as to what you need to do next but this is still an enjoyable mind bending game. The shear size and scope of the hotel is shown early on in the lift sequence, the large lobbies and lounge areas stretching out, but the nature of your 2m x 2m cube means you never quite get that full freedom, you are on a well guided path even if you don't really know it. There's little story to the game, no characters to move you along, just secrets to unravel as you make your way to the end.
This isn't the longest of games (roughly 2 hours) but I often find that short bite sized VR games are where the gems are, more willing to take risks and try something different.
This was up there with one of the best VR games of the year for me, a brilliant if little short puzzler, showing what VR gaming can really do when you apply a little bit of care and ingenuity. An absolute must play either on PSVR2 or even better on the Quest for the full freedom of movement.
